JULIE:: This is powerful because I’ve never went back to I’m just dark! I, in two hours [finger snap] my thoughts about me was erased and replaced!
KYLE: You broke that mental cycle that you probably lived with for since childhood.
JULIE:: Yes. For years!
KYLE: In two hours!
JULIE:: And in two hours!
KYLE: Of singing that scripture over yourself!
JULIE:: Yes! Over me!
KYLE: I know that you’ve had an amazing story of being with Heidi Baker in Pemba when the electricity went off. People started to get angry. Talk to us about that.
JULIE:: Well, and this is another power of singing the Bible Sid Roth, I was with Heidi. We were actually in an unreached people group! And Heidi goes in. This is how she shares the Word in Pemba. She sets up electricity. She sets up the movie “Jesus.” But she also shows it in their own dialect. And so right when Jesus is hanging on the cross she stops the movie and she begins to preach the Gospel!
KYLE: Mmm!
JULIE:: Well that night this unreached group wanted to see the movie! And we couldn’t get the movie going! The electricity would not work except to her mic. Sid Roth There was another amazing worship leader, Jason Lee Jones, and he’s there and he is trying to get the keyboard to work. It won’t work! And I can see people getting angry! And what happens when they get angry is they throw rocks at you. Hard!
KYLE: Probably were going to stone you, huh?
JULIE:: They stone you!
KYLE: Yeah.
JULIE:: And you could feel the tension and in my heart, I went what are we going to do? I mean no! Somebody do something! And right then Heidi, she looked, she had this mic and she goes “sing!”
KYLE: To you she saying it?
JULIE:: Oh yeah! Right after I went what are we going to do! You know?
KYLE: Just what you’re feeling like doing at that point I’m sure!
JULIE:: But right then the only song I knew in Portuguese, which is much like a lot of their dialogue was. [Sings in Portuguese] “Obrigado, Senor. Alleluia.” Which means basically it means “Thank You, Father! We must praise You!”
KYLE: Umm!
JULIE:: And I sang that! I just sang it and sang it and sang it! And I had my eyes closed at first and I am telling you I could feel the tension stop and in the midst of that “Obrigado, Senor. Allelu.” Those 5–6 words. People dropped their rocks. The electricity came on. And then Jason Lee Jones, he began to sing the story of the Gospel in their own dialect! And I mean it was the winner, the champion of Pemba that day was the scriptures! The Word of God being sung out! It displaced anger in people’s hearts and made them want to listen to what was being said and this is the power of singing the Bible!
KYLE: For someone that says okay, I get if for you! You’re gifted in singing. It’s a beautiful thing. I understand why you would do this but I’m not a singer! I sound horrible, maybe they say. Why should they still sing versus maybe just speak or read or meditate on the scripture?
JULIE:: Right.
